Engine sale advice please?

Post by TimS »

Hi all,

I have a cotchel of Ford engines that I'm no longer likely to need (for the Ranger [1]) that I'd like to sell:

A straight 1300 that I bought running from someone who upgraded it from his own kitcar project that I have run up on the bench. I really bought the gearbox at the time (currently in the Ranger) and the engine came with it and I weas going to use that engine as well as the current one (straight 1300 with 78K on the clock when we took it out the donor) is quite clattery now (tappet faces worn).

A 1300 GT that I took out of a 1300 GT donor when I was building the Ranger [2]. It might still be with it's gearbox (under cover in the garden and not seen for years).

A 1600 that I bought off someone else who had replaced it for something bigger (a 2L Pinto I think) that I belive had been stripped and rebuilt by the PO but is currently seized (was in my mates garage workshop that sprung a leak).

A 2L / 100K Pinto that I took out of my 82 Sierra Estate that was my Co car from new (and I bought off them and had for 23 years in all), that was kept in the dry and was still running well the day before I stripped it.

The 5sp 'Type 9'? gearbox that was with the Pinto and was still slick / quiet when I last used it.

I believe the 5sp gearbox would probably sell easily on eBay but I was wondering if there was a 'good place' that might be interested in all the engines as a job lot, maybe to strip / rebuild etc?

Or if not, what might be the best way to move them on giving me the best return and them going to a good home (no just scrap)?

Cheers and keep cool / safe. ;-)

[1] I *might* convert the Ranger to electric ...

[2] If only I'd know what a 2 door Escort shell would have fetched 30 years after I cut it up ... ;-(

p.s. I also have a couple of sets of 14" Ford fit wheels of different designs / specs? Where to advertise them?

Hi Tim,
That's quite a collection you have there. They are all potentially worth a few bob I would say, especially the crossflows? I think I would start with a post on the club's Facebook page to see if there is any interest. If you're not in a rush to move them I can include an add in the next club mag, but that won't be going out until September. You could try an old school Ford specialist like GS Escorts in Runcorn. If they are not interested in taking them off your hands, they may at least be able to give you some advice.
Good luck and keep as posted on how you get on.

Hi Kevin and thanks for the reply and advice.

I'll give the FB page a look (I'm not really a FB user) and ping GS Escorts as you suggest. ;-)

HI,

Yes, I still have it all as I haven't got round to that sort of thing yet.

I've sold the Canadian canoe, the tandem kayak, a nice 11hp wood chipper / shredder and I'm currently working on a 3x5' trailer and daughters 600cc Suzuki Bandit. ;-)

Basically I drove that Pinto engine from new when it was in my company 2L GL Sierra Estate. I did a few miles in it the first few years but then was more office based, only going out as the last resort if the other guys couldn't sort something or for the bigger (Datacomms) installs. Then I bought the car off the Co and drove it up till the car itself was getting pretty shabby so I broke it myself, keeping the engine and gearbox to put in the Ranger because it was still running well.

In readiness I bought the higher strut brace and a different sump (off a 2L Cortina?), I had a new oil pump and cam shaft for it and bought the club engine mounts [1], new shocks and springs ... but then got a 1600 Kent and felt it would be a simpler swap.

I think the Pinto engine had done about 100,000 miles and was still running well the day before I broke it.

I believe I also have all the electrics / looms etc. The only thing I think was off the engine was the flywheel and I may have taken that off to fit it on an engine stand (but would need to check that's it's still there, no reason to think it wouldn't be).

I have a portable crane and trailer and may be willing to meet half way / deliver by arrangement if it helps a club member etc.

Cheers, T i m

[1] I bought the mounts just tack welded then gave them to a local specialist to weld up for me but never got them back. ;-(
